On Saturday the 29th of October eight pupils and two adults travelled to Dornoch to the Highland Small Schools’ Seven-a-side football tournament. We played four grueling games against some very strong teams and unfortunately we failed to qualify. Going into our final game, we had won two games and lost one. We had to at least draw to go through to the semi-finals. Despite Dale Cunningham opening the score line with a superb long-range volley we lost 2-1. Our attackers didn’t have an easy day – however they managed to score seven goals. Five of these came from Dale Cunningham, Kenneth MacLennan scored a sublime long-range goal and David Gorman neatly tucked a brilliant team goal into the bottom corner. Our defence were no slouches either, Murdo and Kenneth MacLennan managed to withstand the opposition on many occasions – only losing games by one goal. Our goalie, Reece MacDonald, also made some great saves. We had Sandy Garrioch playing on the right of midfield creating some very good attacking opportunities and myself on the left doing the same. On the whole we were happy with our team’s performance and we look forward to next year’s tournament. We would like to thank Mr. Cumming for organising training this year and we would also like to thank Mrs. Gorman for taking five of our players to the tournament. Int 1 Kayaking

Photos taken during this term’s kayaking sessions include pictures of the S5/6 OE class (Nick, Sandy, Kirsty and Carianne) and the S3 OE class (Craig, Paul, Patrick, Jake, Jerome, Beth and Carla.) They are all working towards achieving their SQA Int 1 kayaking unit. We have had sessions in the sea kayaks in beautiful calm conditions with both classes experiencing close encounters with the dolphins in Kerry Bay. House Colours

Fit for Girls – Studies show that 65% of 14year-old girls do not reach the recommended levels of physical activity and 43% of women do little or no exercise. The Fit for Girls programme seeks to improve on this situation and over the past three years the PE department and the Active Schools Coordinator have been involved in this programme. Our S2 female pupils were investigated in session 2008/9 and found to be significantly better than the average. The follow-up survey in 2010/11 on the same pupils (in 4th year by this time) showed a significant increase in activity levels and even better attitudes towards sports and activity. This is a very gratifying result, especially for Mrs. Hildrey and Mrs. Johnston who have done so much to encourage the girls in their efforts.

As a result of the schools involvement in the programme our Active Schools Coordinator, Dr Shearer, has been able to access funds to provide every girl in the school with polo shirts in their house colours: Kerry-blue; Maree-red and Tollaidh-yellow. Mrs. Gulliver, has designed attractive logos for each house and these are embroidered on the shirts. Click here to see more photos of the girls and the House logos.

Elementary Food Hygiene Certificates Awarded

Gairloch High School pupils proudly display their Elementary Food Hygiene Certificates. Pupils were presented at Assembly first day back this term along with several staff who also successfully completed the course.

The new Skills for Work Hospitality class have all worked hard to obtain their certificates. This new course, in conjunction with West Highland College, is looking to build on existing partnerships with local employers and training providers. Hospitality is a well-established industry in Wester Ross and this course fills an identified need to meet the needs of industry and will help Gairloch pupils maximise their potential. Teacher in charge, Mr Milner, is delighted with the positive start pupils have made and he is keen to to make sure the pupils learn through practical experience.

McRobert Cup Basketball Finals

On Friday 24th June, Connor Moore, Matthew MacLean, Aaron Lyon, Innis Taylor and Louis Stein, along with Mr. Johnston & David Gorman, travelled to Alness to take part in the finals of the McRobert Cup. It was a major achievement for them to reach these finals, and they were up against some very impressive – and much larger – schools: Culloden, Dornoch, Fortrose, Inverness Royal Academy, Wick, Millburn and Golspie. The boys won 5 matches, and lost 1. Millburn also won 5 and lost 1, but because we actually lost against Millburn, they carried off the cup. So, our boys got a well-deserved second place and medals. They behaved very well on and off the court; they entered the spirit of the occasion, and could be seen smiling and chatting with their opponents between matches. This was a great experience for them all, and they represented Gairloch to a very high standard. Very well done! Click on the photo above to see more photographs of the event taken by Miss Hunter.

Grammar Giant and Hats

Not many people know that the responsibility for the intricacies of German grammar lies with the German Grammar Giants……

On Tuesday the S2 German class were rewarded for their excellent grasp of German grammar by a visit from a representative of the “German Grammar Giants”! They all wore hats to greet the Giant and there was cake – Blackforest Cherry Cake (a popular item in Germany!) to help put everyone in festive mood to celebrate the occasion. The Giant, it is true, did bear a more than passing resemblance to Sophie Donald from S6 who has worked tirelessly with the S2s during the past year and who provided us all with some lasting memories!!
